Clare Freeman – Founder My Plus One

Can you tell us about yourself?
I grew up on a farm in Oxfordshire and went to school in Oxford. I travelled a lot from 18 onwards, went to university in Nottingham, and lived in Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Brisbane and Berlin, and visited many other places. I lived in Berlin for three and a half years and moved back to London in March 2013.

Why have you started this?
I love traveling, but often when I moved to places alone, or travelled by myself, I felt disconnected from the local scene of a city, and wanted to meet like-minded people and find the best places to go to. I also used to work in hotels and feel that it can be difficult to find accommodation that is stylish, well-located and also affordable.

I created My Plus One so travellers can meet interesting, like-minded locals in cities, and also find great places to stay.

Where do you get your inspiration?
From traveling! I love going to different cities and exploring, finding new interesting places, gathering ideas and being inspired in the process.

Who inspires you and why?
I find Anita Roddick inspiring as she built a very successful business, and she did it with a lot of integrity and ethics.

What does a typical day look like for you?
There is no typical day at the moment! I travel quite a bit and, as there is no fixed office for us yet, tend to take my laptop and work in different cafes or places in London. My favourite places to work are Ace hotel in Shoreditch, the British Library and Google Campus.

Can you name some of your favorite places in Amsterdam?

Unfortunately I don’t know Amsterdam that well! I like Two for Joy for coffee, and the café at The Exchange hotel.

What is the hotspot in Amsterdam that is still on your bucket list and why?

Generally a lot of places! I’d like to get to know Amsterdam a lot better.

What’s next?
Our aim is to grow the community of users, locals and accommodation partners over the next few months. We’re also planning to create an App.

Together with My Plus One we’ve created a special bucket list for London. See the full list with places here.
