Kris Mutsers – The Oddity Shop

Can you tell us about yourself?

I grew up in a little village and my shopping highlights consisted of touring with my grandma through thrift stores in search of treasures.. I wish there was online shopping back then, but in a way these tours created my exotic taste for old items and vintage clothes.

Why have you started this?

One of the first spots I went to when I came living in Amsterdam where the fleamarkets of the IJHallen.. there I always hunted for items for myself but couldn’t resist buying things for friends as well. I always had a nose to pick up items that they were looking for.

My friends always encouraged me to do something with these skills. And when it was time for a career chance I decided to go for it and give it a try!

Where do you get your inspiration?

Oldskool memories, movies sets, fashion, old books about interior!

Who inspires you and why?

People who just like me see beauty in a lot of things, the exaggerating Italian style of Anna della Russo, the mondial and music influenced taste of Vivienne Westwood and the insides of the houses of a lot of artists that are often a cohesive chaos by coincidence.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I also have a normal job :  ) do some freelance things as well, am pregnant and in between try to go treasure hunting as much as possible.. preferable with my parents.

Can you name some of your favorite places in Amsterdam?

EAT: GOUDFAZANT want to open a shop in there!

DRINK: now my shop opened up in east of Amsterdam this gives me a nice opportunity to spend some more time there and I like the look of Bukowski!

RELAX: walking the dog in Westerpark, or taking a kundalini yoga class there at the school gardens or buurtboerderij.

SHOP: IJHallen!

What is the hotspot in Amsterdam that is still on your bucket list and why?

I haven’t been there yet but planning to go to repere when they open up again and the vuurtoren eiland.. young, experimental and creative initiatives, good food and great environment.

What’s next?

Hopefully, there comes a time that the shop will be fulltime.. I have some interesting regular suppliers for oddities, I have a permanent shop (maybe in combination with some other nice entrepeneurs like good coffee makers) and a old van with which I can go hunting!
